THE GONSTEAD TECHNIQUE
The Gonstead System is unique because it is thorough, complete and specific in both analyzing and treating the spine. Dr. Hackbart will address your whole spine when evaluating for the presence of vertebral subluxations. The 5 criteria used to do this are x-ray analysis, instrumentation, siatic palpation, motion palpation and visualization.
X-ray films allow the doctor to visualize the entire spine. This is helpful in evaluating for any disease processes, fracture, posture, joint and disc integrity along with vertebral misalignments.
The nerveoscope is the instrument that detects uneven distributions of heat along the spine which can be indicative of inflammation and nerve pressure. This is the instrument of choice in the Gonstead system. It is guided down the spine and feels like two fingers gliding down each side of the spine.
Siatic palpation is simply the process of feeling your spine in a stationary position. The doctor will feel for the presence of swelling, tenderness or any other abnormal texture and tightness in the muscles and other tissues of your back.
Motion palpation involves feeling the spine while moving and bending it at various angles. This enables the doctor to determine how easily or difficult each segment in the spine moves in different directions to see if there are restricted or “locked” joints.
Visualization is the way the doctor can cross reference all other findings such as change in your posture and movement which could indicate problems.
After a complete analysis the doctor is ready to deliver the necessary spinal adjustments. The focus of the Gonstead adjustment is to be as specific, precise and accurate as possible along with the correct position and precise thrust to provide the most accurate and painless adjustment. The doctors goal is to restore and maintain optimal health by correcting any interference to the nervous system caused by vertebral subluxations.
